Here at last: Chelsea unveiled their away jersey for the 2023-24 season this week, and to be honest, it doesn’t look bad at all. The geometric pattern featured on the shirt gives a retro-futuristic vibe that reminds us of the movie Tron.
Well played, Nike. Well played.
However, two things about the jersey have left people a little bit confused:
- The decade inspiring the design.
- The choice of color.
Chelsea Away Jersey 2023-24
Again, we like the shirt. The graphic on the fabric looks dope, the details in different shades of blue on the cuffs and the neck are exceptional, as are the golden and white elements you can see in Nike’s logo and Chelsea’s badge.
But when it comes time to talk about the inspiration behind the design, things get a tad strange.
According to Chelsea, the jersey channels the team’s heritage from the 1990s. However, the video used to promote the launch somehow has a vibe more in line with the 1980s. There is even a Rubik’s cube included, which was invented in 1974!
Puzzling.
But that’s not all. When you visit Nike.com, the blurb describing the product states the shirt is “an early 2000s throwback.” So, who should you believe?
Oops!
And then you have the issue of the color.
Chelsea’s home kit is already blue. So what’s the point of having an away uniform also in blue? Sure, the hues are different and somewhat contrasting, but again, what in the world were they thinking?
There are so many options in the color palette that it’s shocking to see this happening with one of the biggest teams in the world’s biggest league.
